If you're at all interested in space, then you've probably been keeping an eye on the development of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope. And if you have been keeping an eye on this telescope, then you’ve no doubt seen the imagery that I’m about to share. Regardless, I can say with certainty that its deployment has been monumental for astronomy—and the first images released by NASA have got my inner geek very excited!
In early July 2022, an image of galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 was released to the public. The results were stunning! Detail unlike anything we’ve seen before has been revealed in this one photo. But that’s not all. NASA has since released a whole suite of high resolution images from the space telescope looking at various formations: “Cosmic Cliffs” in Carina, Stephan’s Quintet, the Southern Ring Nebula, and more.
With the James Webb Space Telescope’s latest images, we can see farther into space than ever before. Each new photo reveals more detail and beauty in the universe. The telescope launched in 2021 and these images are only the beginning of its mission. As the telescope continues it’ll travel in an orbit around the Sun—ultimately journeying 1.5 MILLION kilometers away from Earth. Yet despite the considerable distances, it will continue to work toward sending back stunning photos of deep space.
These images remind us that there is so much to learn about our place in the cosmos and will hopefully inspire us to be better stewards of our little planet.
